It's never been just about beards or beard oil for us. Since the early days in Jeremiah's old apartment, our goal has been to been to make stuff that makes people feel good expressing their individuality.
Whether it's grooming goods or apparel or accessories, we're going to strive to make something that's high quality and true to that vision.
So when we met Carson of LEH Seats here in Austin, we got to talking about what a TBB dopp kit would look like. We've always tried to set ourselves apart from all the mass produced products on the market, and we wanted this travel bag to be no different.
What we ended up with was the Suited & Booted Dopp Kit, and these are the elements we focused on to craft a truly heirloom quality bag:
High Quality Materials
If you wanted a dopp kit that was going to fall apart after a few months, you might as well stick with that one gallon Ziploc bag you've been throwing everything into up until now.
The body of our Suited & Booted Dopp Kit is made from deadstock, WWII-era military canvas. We were able to track down a whole roll of the stuff, completely unused and as durable as ever.
The ends of the bag are capped in spectacular brown pull up leather hide. The pull up technique is reserved for only the best hides, as they must be rugged yet soft and supple to the touch. The leather is impregnated with natural oils and waxes that "pull up" rich details in the leather as it stretches and creases over time.
Rather than degrade the leather, the inevitable nicks and scratches that come from travel will give this dopp kit a beautiful patina as the years go by. If you've ever seen an old leather couch or leather jacket and drooled over the rich coloring, it was pull up hide just like this that you were noticing.
Caron Leh from LEH Seats may have made his name in custom bicycle saddles, but his skill with leather stretches far beyond. He's crafted custom laptop cases, one-off seats for Revival Cycles' showbikes, and now our Suited & Booted Dopp Kits.
When we started designing an heirloom quality travel bag, we knew Carson was the man to call.
A Great Zipper
When designing a bag to last for decades of rugged use, no detail can be overlooked — that includes the zipper. If the zipper starts to fall apart after 100, or 500, or 1,000 uses, you've unnecessarily shortened the lifespan of the bag. It doesn't matter if the leather and canvas are still going strong, the bag will be toast.
For the Suited & Booted Dopp Kit, we used a YKK antique copper #10 zipper. This is the same type of zipper used in leather bomber jackets and heirloom duffle bags. For as long as you own this dopp kit, this zipper will never let you down.
A Bastard's Style
The brouges motif on the leather end caps, the high-contrast leather pull tab with copper rivets, the vintage WWII canvas — these are the timeless details that set this bag apart from the masses. No matter what we create, we strive to craft something unique that's true to the Bastard style. This bag is no different.
Like any true man of the world, the Suited & Booted Dopp Kit looks as good dressed up as it does trekking through the mud, and only continues to get better with age.
