Identifying When Your Beard or Mustache Looks Broken

If your facial hair has been looking extra dry and frazzled lately, it’s possible that you have a broken beard and mustache.  While it’s normal for hairs to break after a certain point, it’s still possible for facial hair to become unusually damaged, resulting in a broken appearance throughout your beard and mustache.

The good news is that there are some ways that you can prevent a broken beard and mustache.  We’re going to explain exactly what causes this condition as well as some easy tips that can keep your facial hair healthier than ever.

What is a Broken Beard or Mustache?

A broken beard or mustache refers to a state in which a man’s facial hair is completely damaged.  Each facial hair is covered in a cuticle. This cuticle acts as a protective coating, keeping each strand safe from damage caused by environmental factors.

The problem is that the cuticle itself can become damaged if you’re not careful.  Once the cuticle is damaged, the hair shaft becomes broken, resulting in split ends.  When your beard and mustache are full of split ends, your facial hair will appear frizzy, dry and messy.

What Causes Broken Facial Hair?

There are many ways in which cuticles can become damaged, resulting in broken facial hair.  One of the biggest culprits is a lack of moisture. Our hair needs a good deal of hydration in order to stay healthy and smooth.  If you’re not regularly moisturizing your beard and mustache, the cuticles of your facial hair can become damaged.

There are plenty of environmental factors that can cause damage as well.  Dry air can deprive hair of moisture. On days that are very windy, very cold or very hot, your hair needs extra moisture as well.

Also, if you’re not drinking enough water each day, your hair can become dehydrated as a result.  That’s why it’s crucial that you stay on top of your water intake on a daily basis.

How to Prevent Your Beard and Mustache from Looking Broken

Here are some prevention tips you can use to keep your beard and mustache looking good:

Use Hydrating Products

One of the most important things to do is to invest in some beard care products that provide each strand with loads of moisture. Opt for a beard oil that’s made with plant-based oils.  Make sure that you use it each day. If your beard is particularly dry, you can use it once in the morning and once in the evening for extra moisture.

You can also add a beard balm to your daily regimen.  Choose one that’s made with natural ingredients like beeswax and lanolin.  These ingredients will coat each strand of facial hair, protecting it from harsh weather and other environmental factors.

For wax, the Bearded Bastard Mustache Wax comes in different scents, allowing you to express your unique personality while you rock a flawless mustache.  Each wax has been formulated to improve the look and feel of your mustache while offering the perfect hold you’re looking for. Heavier on beeswax than oils, this product is less hydrating than beard balm.

Don’t Brush or Comb Your Facial Hair Too Frequently

Believe it or not, combing or brushing your facial hair too frequently can cause a broken beard and mustache.  The constant friction of the comb or brush against each hair cuticle can cause irreparable damage, resulting in a broken appearance. It’s suggested that you brush or comb your beard no more than once each day as part of your daily grooming and styling routine.

Keep Your Beard and Mustache Unbroken

While a broken beard isn’t exactly uncommon, it’s safe to say that no man wants to have facial hair that looks unhealthy and unruly.  If you want to keep your beard and mustache looking and feeling great, invest in some hydrating products that protect it from damage.
